چکیده

Clouds play a crucial role in the radiative balance of the earth’s surface, particularly in the Arctic where they participate in various feedback mechanisms with the underlying surface that consists of a complex mixture of snow, sea-ice, and open water. Our current understanding of clouds, and especially their representation in climate models, is limited. Longer term observational studies of the macroand micro-physical properties of clouds, particularly in understudied regions like the Arctic, are necessary to more clearly elucidate many cloud-related factors: average bulk cloud properties, cloud formation and persistence mechanisms, and the interactions of clouds and radiation. A clearer picture of clouds is needed if we expect to accurately predict weather or model clouds in future climates.

Aircraft Microphysical and Surface-Based Radar Observations of Summertime Arctic Clouds

Updated analyses of in situ microphysical properties of three Arctic cloud systems sampled by aircraft in July 1998 during the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean (SHEBA)/First International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP) Regional Experiment–Arctic Clouds Experiment (FIRE–ACE) are examined in detail and compared with surface-based millimeter Doppler radar. A fourth case is give...

Ice Cloud Optical Thickness and Extinction Estimates from Radar Measurements

A remote sensing method is proposed to derive vertical profiles of the visible extinction coefficients in ice clouds from measurements of the radar reflectivity and Doppler velocity taken by a vertically pointing 35-GHz cloud radar. The extinction coefficient and its vertical integral, optical thickness t, are among the fundamental cloud optical parameters that, to a large extent, determine the...

Analysis of Integrated Cloud Liquid and Precipitable Water Vapor Retrievals from the ARM Microwave Radiometer During SHEBA

Dual frequency, ground-based, Microwave Radiometers (MWRs) have been used for more than 20 years to derive columnar amounts of both water vapor (WV) and cloud liquid and a large number of studies have been made comparing retrievals of precipitable water vapor by MWRs vs. radiosondes and vs. Raman Lidar. Comparisons of MWR cloud liquid retrievals are much more limited, primarily because cloud li...

An Arctic Springtime Mixed-Phase Cloudy Boundary Layer Observed during SHEBA

The microphysical characteristics, radiative impact, and life cycle of a long-lived, surface-based mixedlayer, mixed-phase cloud with an average temperature of approximately 20°C are presented and discussed. The cloud was observed during the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic experiment (SHEBA) from 1 to 10 May 1998. Vertically resolved properties of the liquid and ice phases are retrieved using...

A FIRE-ACE/SHEBA Case Study of Mixed-Phase Arctic Boundary Layer Clouds: Entrainment Rate Limitations on Rapid Primary Ice Nucleation Processes

Observations of long-lived mixed-phase Arctic boundary layer clouds on 7 May 1998 during the First International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP) Regional Experiment (FIRE)–Arctic Cloud Experiment (ACE)/Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean (SHEBA) campaign provide a unique opportunity to test understanding of cloud ice formation. Under the microphysically simple conditions observe...
